Huge thank you to Cara!!! She overheard our table not being able to get back to our hotel and drove us back to the Salamander! Would give more stars if I could!
We were out of Uber/lyft pickup range and the hotel was unable to send a shuttle to get us back, so a Cara volunteered to help!
What a fantastic example for all of us, she went above and beyond to help complete strangers who were stranded!!!
Food here was great, drinks were amazing and the smoked drink was a show stopper! Service was also top notch!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Lynn B.Arlington, VA0232May 19, 2024
After arriving, I realized I'd been there before years ago but had no recollection of the food. So this time I will review.
Stopped in a Friday for lunch. It was not a planned destination but came upon it when it was time for lunch.
Location and ambience: beautiful garden seating with comfortable sturdy outdoor chairs with arms - a relief for those of us who become wiser and wider with age. The garden was in full bloom and I admired the beauty and the work to keep it going. We browsed the inside and it was lovely.
Service: friendly and welcoming.
Food: husband got the huge slice of quiche and salad. The quiche was and nicely browned on top. It was so much different than I make - in a good way.
I was torn between the burger and the "sweet and spicy crab cake sandwich" lunch special. I went with the crab cake thinking it would be lighter since I knew we had big dinner plans later. Sadly it was mostly breading and very dense. It came with "hand cut chips" which were french fries and not crisp. All a good reminder to ask how the crab cake is prepared, to ask the crab to breading ratio- especially when far from the shore. Crab cakes vary so much, I really don't know why I bothered to risk it. Oh well, my lesson.
Would I go again? If in the area I might stop in to try something else and enjoy a drink.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 12, 20241 check-in
It's a very interesting setting in the village of Upperville, that very much gives the classic British country side tavern vibe. Definitely make a reservation if you want to come, it does get crowded. The first time we tried to go at lunch, it was a 1.5 hr wait.
Service was ok- friendly but not very attentive. We had to ask for almost everything that should have been fairly basic.
The food was mediocre, with the bread being the best part. My chicken fried steak was ok at best, seeming to follow the British food trend of using minimal to no spice or seasoning- not what I would expect on a southern style dish. Even the potatos were bland, and the green beans were screaming for a hefty dose of salt during roasting. The kids meal were not much better. The Mac and cheese was a runny mess. The chicken strips were tough and chewy. It was not an impressive meal.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - J G.Sterling, VA028Feb 7, 2024
We've been going to Hunters Head for over 10 years. It used to be somewhere we enjoyed going every couple of months, and was often our date night or anniversary go-to because we loved the ambiance and food. We recently moved and so hadn't been for a year or so.
In terms of the food we certainly took note of the reduction in the menu, including pretty basic items that we regularly ordered (mac-n-cheese and shepherds pie.) There were very few items and out of the 2 mains we ordered only one was something we would order again. The pot roast was wonderful. The calamari, as always was very good as well.
We were surprised by the service as well. We had never had a poor experience here in terms of service. When we arrived for a 7 PM dinner reservation there were only 3 other tables seated in the restaurant, and it didn't get any busier during our meal. My wife and I had a sitter, were planning to have a relaxed quiet date night, and take our time leisurely enjoying some drinks and food. We ordered a salad and calamari as appetizers as well as our 2 main courses. The calamari came out quickly and a few minutes later the salad came out. We thought that those 2 could have been coursed out better but they were both appetizers so, sure. We hadn't had more than another 3-4 minutes and had both main courses crowding the tiny table as well. After finishing our meal our intent was to have dessert and another drink or two. Our server dropped off the dessert menu, didn't ask if we'd like more drinks, and returned a few minutes later when told that we were still chatting and kicking around dessert thoughts. When she came back she asked if we'd like the check as soon as she came to the table. It may not have been her intent, but we felt as though we were being treated like the restaurant was busy and they were trying to free up the table. We payed our bill and went home instead of lingering for another hour or two, enjoying each others company and ordering more. It just wasn't what we expected based on our past experiences, and left us disappointed.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - 0951Apr 29, 2024
Good food and environment for an upper causal dinning experience. They do not play background music or have a band play on the weekends out of respect for the neighbors. They have a tent and space with space heaters during the winter to expand their dining experience.

Everything we ordered was stupendous! The quiche was light, and soufflé-like; accompanied by a light greens salad (get the lemon herb vinaigrette). I was informed the sandwich was mighty tasty.
The Blueberry pie was to die for....not too sweet!
The service was above and beyond. I really enjoyed walking around and checking the place out. What really neat place with rich history!
I look forward to coming back!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 773762924Jun 23, 2023Updated review
A traditional English Pub set into the charming town of Upperville VA. The atmosphere is enhanced by the outdoor patio dining which is dog friendly. Service is quick and the food is the best version of English pub food. They serve arguably the best fish and chips in Northern Virginia and it's my go-to order. They also offer amazing sticky toffee pudding and a wide selection of beers on tap as befits a proper pub. There are vegetarian dishes on offer too but the pub grub is the best option. They have a small gravel parking lot and there is street parking in the village. Highly recommend making a reservation, especially on summer weekends when the patio is super popular.

Serving up consistently excellent renditions of all the favorites made up fresh with locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. Housed in a historic dwelling in the picturesque town of Upperville, VA with cozy rooms and real wood burning fireplaces - the building is also rumored to be haunted by (mainly) friendly ghosts. Our favorite dishes are the fish and chips served up with mushy peas and the rich moist sticky toffee pudding. During the summer you can dine outside on the enclosed patio. Reservations are a must. Particularly on weekends or holidays.
Feb 26, 2019Previous reviewIf you're looking for traditional English pub grub, this is the place! You won't find anything more authentic than this in Northern Virginia. From the beer battered fish with freshly made fries (with a side of mushy peas) to the bangers and mash, Guinness beef stew and bubble & squeak, I was thrilled to find authentic pub food of the highest quality.
If you're looking for something a little lighter, the Hunters Head also offers a variety of sandwiches and salads more familiar to American palates. Plus a full children's menu with all the usual suspects (looking at YOU chicken nuggets!)
If you're looking for something a little fancier, you can get a proper afternoon tea (with an advance reservation) suitable for any Lord or Lady and replete with traditional dainties and lashings of cream. They even serve Sunday brunch, American style, French Toast and all.
If that's not enough, The Hunters Head is a true pub, with all day service 7 days a week and a variety of domestic and imported beers and Strongbow Cider (my fave!) available on tap, wines by the glass and bottle and of course your mixed drinks.
Service is friendly and fast and servers are happy to chat about pretty much anything if the place isn't crushed with customers. Reservations are available on open table, and weekends are busy, particularly in the summer, so you will want to book a table in advance or risk a long wait.
The restaurant is housed in a charming historic home located in Upperville, VA, (yes, there's a ghost!) that grew up higgledy-piggledy around a log cabin and offers real wood-burning fires in every room during the colder months and a gorgeous patio within a walled garden to enjoy in warmer weather. Pets are welcome on the patio in summer as well.

We ate lunch there today and everything was fabulous !! I recommend reservations because it fills up rather quickly. I highly recommend the "Shepherds Pie".... It's fantastic !! The brussel sprouts are out of this world. Try to sit in the main level dining room with the beautiful fireplace !! Our server was extremely knowledgeable of the menu, attentive, great demeanor and I would request her again !! (Tiffani L) We will definitely be back !! They were decorating the exterior for Christmas so I can't wait to see the final touches !!
