Six New Spots to Check Out on H Street

H Street NE continues to gain steam as one of DC's hottest restaurant rows. While it still hasn't quite reached 14th Street status, newcomers are still popping up left and right. Here's a look at the new places that opened on H Street NE (between Union Station and the starburst intersection) this summer.

Po Boy Jim's: This New Orleans-themed restaurant serves a wide selection of po boys, from traditional (shrimp, oyster) to international (Asian teriyaki, Rasta vegan patty with coconut) to indulgent specialties (lobster, buffalo oyster). A small selection of entrees includes gumbo, etouffee and blackened salmon. Outdoor and indoor seating are both available, as are take-out orders. 709 H St. NE; website.

Micho's Lebanese Grill: Fast-casual spot with a straightforward Lebanese menu (think shawarma, falafel, tabbouleh, etc.). They add a nice twist by offering the "Chipotle" style experience — diners can build their own pita wrap or rice bowl if none of the traditional combinations appeal. If the weather's nice, grab a seat on their sizeable patio — or anyone in a rush can take it to go. 500 H St. NE; website.

Ocopa: This Peruvian restaurant (which got a fairly glowing early review from Tom Sietsema) opened in August. Those seeking the usual Peruvian standards won't be disappointed: ceviche, roast chicken, Peruvian fried rice (here spiked with quinoa) and lomo saltado all make appearances on the menu. But the adventurous will be rewarded, too: lamb belly, beef heart, and tripe each star in their own dishes as well. Pisco cocktails are prevalent. DC Harvest: If there was any question of whether the farm-to-table movement had arrived on H Street yet, DC Harvest has laid that to rest. The restaurant prides itself on "utilizing specifically sourced products from local farms and vendors" on its seasonal and (relatively healthy menu). The kitchen makes creative use of vegetables, but diners can also indulge with the Old Bay fried chicken special Monday nights.  517 H St. NE; website.

The Pursuit Wine Bar: There's really only one thing diners need to know about this place: they can design their own grilled cheese. Choose from five breads, seven cheeses, six spreads and seven veg- and non-veg add-ons. The brunch menu is basic but comforting: waffles, French toast, grits with or without shrimp, and a build-your-own breakfast sandwich. Bullfrog Bagels: D.C.'s pop-up, New York-style bagel joint has found a home within the Star & Shamrock location. They're serving bagels, bagels sandwiches, bialys, Zeke's coffee and more. They're open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. 1341 H St. NE; website.
